(Editor’s Note: This is the first part of a weekly series on Michigan State’s football recruiting efforts by position. This week is quarterbacks, next week will be running backs and so on and so forth. It will somewhat correspond with the position-by-position previews for the 2012 season.)

Michigan State currently has offers out to a few uncommitted quarterbacks, including many prospects who bring a little more than just passing to their game.

Top targets Matt Alviti, Tyler Bruggman and Damion Terry all have great mobility and throw well on the run — and are giving MSU a decent look.

Alviti named Michigan State as one of his top three schools, including Northwestern and Notre Dame, but with the Irish having picked up a QB for its class already, it might be down to two.

The 6-foot, 176-pound prospect from Illinois has a strong arm and runs well with the ball — bringing flashes of former Northwestern quarterback Dan Persa, which makes him seem likely to end up in the Wildcats’ offense. He does a solid job when he rolls out of the pocket and tape shwos he sets his feet well before getting rid of the ball.

Alviti is ranked as the No. 9 quarterback in the 2013 class and the No. 210 player overall by Rivals.com.

He passed for 2,210 yards as a junior with 29 passing touchdowns and 12 rushing touchdowns.

Bruggman, from Brophy Prep in Phoenix, Ariz., brings a similar game to Alviti and is a similar size.

At 6-1, 190 pound, the junior plays with a wide receiver who has an MSU offer in Devon Allen. He is rated the No. 14 quarterback and No. 232 prospect overall.

He passed for 37 touchdowns as a junior to just two interceptions, while throwing for 2,497 yards.

Bruggman has pretty good accuracy, evidenced by both his stats and his highlights. He has a pretty strong arm, and stands in the pocket well under pressure and delivers the ball well. He looks a little like a smaller version of Kirk Cousins, as he also throws off his back foot a little when facing the blitz.

Once of his strongest suits is how he consistently squares his shoulders to his target as he moves out of the pocket, which improves his accuracy on the run. He also looks comfortable throwing across his body rolling to the left, which is pretty impressive for a junior.

Terry, who visited MSU for junior day in February, will be on campus Thursday with his teammate, Delton Williams, who also has an offer from MSU as a athlete/safety.

The junior from Erie Cathedral Prep has the best size of the group at 6-4, 210 pounds.

Similar to Bruggman, Terry does a great job of squaring up to his targets on the run. He also shows a good presence in the pocket, stepping up away from pressure and avoiding the blitz.

The thing that seems to separate Terry is his arm on the deep ball, he has a strong arm but throws with tremendous touch and drops the ball in on stride to the receiver. While all three of these quarterbacks run some play action, it seems Terry has the best grasp on selling the handoff before dropping back to pass.

MSU also has extended offers to Alton Meeks (Boone, Fla.), Cody Thomas (Colleyville, Texas) and Mitch Trubisky (Mentor, Ohio). Scout.com also has an offer listed for Kevin Olsen (Wayne, N.J.).

All in all, MSU has some pretty good quarterback prospects with scholarship offers and it will be the first one who commits to take the spot in this class.

When Michigan State received the information that Gary Harris was committing to Tom Izzo, it sent a shockwave of excitement through Spartans fans everywhere — and the coaches.

As Harris prepared for tonight’s McDonald’s All-American Game (9:30 p.m. on ESPN), his fellow All-Americans have seen way. In a story from MLive.com, other top recruits had plenty to say about the talents of the 6-foot-5 guard.

“He’s an all-around player,” said Perry Ellis, who is headed to Kansas. “He’s real aggressive, and he attacks the basket. I really like his game.”

“He’s a great scorer, very unselfish,” UCLA-bound Kyle Anderson said. “Normally a lot of guys come to McDonald’s and hog the ball pretty much, but hasn’t done that at all. He can shoot really well. I think he fits into Michigan State’s offense really well.”

Izzo had his own praise for Harris, saying that he will help Michigan State’s athleticism next season.

Harris had plenty to say about Izzo, as well.

“Coach Izzo, he’s a great guy, a great coach,” Harris said. “It felt like a family when I was up there on my visit. If I was going somewhere far away from home, that was exactly what I’m looking for. I can’t wait. It’s going to be fun. It’s a new chapter in my life, moving on to college. I’m looking forward to it.”

Following practices this week, Scout.com and ESPN both moved Harris up in their player rankings to the No. 11 spot. Also, the voting for Indiana’s Mr. Basketball ends tonight, which Harris is one of the frontrunners to win. The other leading candidate is Indiana commit Yogi Ferrell.

This weekend brings with it one of the most exciting events in sports: the Final Four.

It also brings with it two teams led by upperclassmen, and two teams led by underclassmen — one of which is the epitome of a scary trend in college athletics.

In basketball, it is the one-and-done player and in football, it is the “free-agent” transfer. The rules apply to all NCAA sports, and stretch beyond just those two. The NCAA has a scary way of telling athletes what is most important is their individual goals and the business that is college sports.

Of the teams in the Final Four, Louisville starts two seniors, a junior, a sophomore and a freshman. Kansas’ Josh Selby left for the 2011 NBA Draft after one season, but Bill Self’s team is led by senior Tyshawn Taylor and junior Thomas Robinson. The top six players in the Jayhawks’ rotation are two redshirt juniors, two juniors, a senior and a redshirt senior.

Ohio State starts four sophomores and one senior. Jared Sullinger is just about a lock to

Kentucky? Well, John Calipari starts three freshman and two sophomores.

Terrence Jones, one of the sophomores, said he was entering the 2011 NBA Draft but withdrew his name. Doron Lamb, the other sophomore, was considering someone who could enter the draft last year, but chose not to. Both are probably turning pro after this season.

The three freshman starters include the likely No. 1 pick in the 2012 NBA Draft (Anthony Davis) and another player who already has declared for the draft (Michael Kidd-Gilchrist). The third member, Marquis Teague, likely will come back for one more year.

Kentucky coach Calipari had a laundry list of players that he coached for just one season in college, also when he was at Memphis.

In 2011, it was point guard Brandon Knight. In 2010, it was a mass exodus from Kentucky to the NBA, with John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Eric Bledsoe and Daniel Orton all heading for a paycheck after one year on campus.

At Memphis in 2009, it was Tyreke Evans who went pro after his freshman season. In 2008, Derrick Rose decided to forgo his final three years of college eligibility.

Mind you, many of these players are stars in the NBA, and made the right decision for them it seems. It works even better for the NBA, which receives players with big name recognition and great marketability. Derrick Rose is one of the faces of the current NBA. John Wall gets plenty of air time. Others like Kevin Durant and Kevin Love are doing huge things for the NBA in their careers after spending one year on a college campus.

Does it benefit college basketball? No. It does not. It sets a standard for teams to have to compete against Calipari for top-level recruits, and in that, make itself appealing to one-and-done players. That is a dangerous trend for college coaches and programs, but Calipari could care less — he is winning.

It is nice to win games, but let’s be honest, it is little more than a convenient one-year marriage between a player and a coach for their mutual benefit. For that year, games are won, exposure is granted. Both sides advance their careers and futures. Sounds like a very nice business deal, but nothing like a sport played by amateur athletes and coaches who are in a position to mold young minds and develop character.

Enjoy college for a year and try to win a national championship.

On the other end, is the free-agent rule, which allows a player who has graduated from his current school to transfer and play immediately elsewhere while they pursue a master’s degree in a program not offered at their current school.

Yes, Michigan State has had players on both ends of this rule. Former MSU basketball player Tom Herzog went and played one season at Central Florida after graduating from MSU.

Last season, Brandon Wood joined MSU after leaving Valparaiso. Wood, who originally declared for the NBA Draft, ended up transferring to MSU under the same rule. Tom Izzo openly stated he was not a fan of the rule, or the precedent it sets.

While the rule does encourage players to get their degrees and stay solid academically, it rewards players on the field for their accomplishments off the field. Not an awful concept, but at the core it boils down to an opportunity for players to get closer to the professional ranks at a bigger school. Are the student-athletes who transfer actually going to follow through and receive a master’s degree — because if they don’t, it was not about academics anyway. Are the student-athletes transferring out of a bad situation?

Greg Paulus did at Syracuse, where he played football for one season after playing basketball for four years at Duke.

Jeremiah Masoli hasn’t at Ole Miss, where he transferred and was ruled eligible after being kicked off the team at Oregon. He left for the NFL, but claimed he will return to school to get his degree. But, was he ever going to finish his master’s in Parks and Recreation Management after receiving his bachelor’s degree in sociology? How about … no.

Dayne Crist, who transferred from Notre Dame to Kansas this winter, will be eligible right away after getting his degree from Notre Dame. Seemingly unhappy with the lack of playing time coming his way after being a starter prior to numerous injuries, Crist headed to KU to unite with his former coach Charlie Weis.

Wisconsin certainly benefited greatly from the transfer of Russell Wilson from NC State last year, and now appears it will again with the transfer of Danny O’Brien from Maryland — who actually has two years of eligibility remaining.

So Bret Bielema, two years in a row, essentially recruits players from other colleges to come and play in Madison and win some games for him. The player gets to play for a solid football program, and the coach gets out of a sticky situation with his lack of quarterbacks — and basically is rewarded for his inability to recruit and build his program.

The use of transfer quarterbacks works for Bielema to cover up his ineptitude to fix his quarterback situation after a year of Russell Wilson to give him time. Instead, he is caught with his pants down and without a quarterback … again.

And for the quarterback, they get to enjoy a year, or two, of college at a new school with a better chance to win a championship.

So similar to Calipari and his one-year recruits, Bielema and his transfer quarterbacks have a nifty little business deal — all while playing within the NCAA rules.

Oh, and another scenario — spoiler alert: it potentially involves Calipari — Connecticut center Alex Oriakhi might be eligible to play next year at another school. Oriakhi, who was unhappy with playing time last year and clashed with coaches, has been released from his scholarship at UConn. If the NCAA slaps a postseason ban on the Huskies, Oriakhi would be eligible to play immediately because the NCAA grants waivers for student-athletes with remaining eligibility concurrent to the postseason ineligibility of the previous institution.

UConn is likely to receive the postseason ban for not meeting the NCAA requirements for its academic progress rate. Oriakhi reports a 3.6 GPA from last fall semester, but nevertheless, he was on some of the teams whose academic progress rate did not measure up to NCAA standards. Even more, his leaving will hurt the programs academic standing.

Kentucky has contacted Oriakhi, but the SEC does have a rule against players transferring for non-academic reasons if they have less than two years of eligibility remaining.

In the end, Orakhi wants to transfer to play in the postseason.

“Alex will transfer because of the NCAA tournament next year,” Alex Oriakhi Sr. said.

He inevitably will find a school, certainly a national powerhouse, and the two will be another one-year marriage for a coach and a player who will look to win a championship together through a convenient rule.

Three rules. Three different reasons and ways college sports can hardly be called amateur athletics, as little more than business arrangements allow coaches and players to make each other look good.

1. The NBA gets the benefit of players coming from a national state to be marketed and make money, and players get the platform to increase their worth and play for a year in college.

2. The NCAA rewards students who get their degree, but in turn give a loophole to players who are frustrated with a current situation or want to play at a better school.

3. The NCAA allows a student to focus on himself or herself, instead of the team, and transfer to a school where they have the chance to play in the postseason.

All the while, these rules hammer home the concept that true long-standing commitment and unselfishness are not important. It is all about the athlete and the business of college athletics.

You stay classy, NCAA.

Mark Dantonio kicked off the spring football practices with a news conference today and had a lot of praise for his team.

“We’ve laid a great foundation …. We’re still not to where we need to go,” Dantonio said.

And that is exactly what spring ball is for, helping gets teams where they need to go.

The spring depth chart also was released, and had some surprises and news with it.

– Unfortunately, Bennie Fowler will be out for part out for part of spring ball because of a screw inserted in his foot 11-12 weeks ago. Dantonio expects Juwan Caesar to be at about 80 percent this spring.

Tony Lippitt is listed as No. 1 receiver, as is Keith Mumphery — who drew praise from Dantonio, who said he is ready to “explode onto the scene.” DeAnthony Arnett’s waiver has been filed is an important piece of news, and he is listed third on the depth chart at one of the receiver spots.

– Other notable injuries include linebackers Chris Norman and Lawrence Thomas. Norman had offseason surgery (if I recall correctly, he had a shoulder injury last season, so the surgery likely was on his shoulder). Thomas still is limited by a shoulder injury. Both Norman and Thomas will have no contact in the practices.

On a positive note, Thomas is up to 280 pounds and Dantonio said, “Who knows what he will be.” In other words, he can be used in a lot of ways when he sees the field.

In the place of Norman at the starting STAR linebacker position is Taiwan Jones, the only freshman who did not redshirt last year. Dantonio said “(Jones) will have a tremendous spring. He’s got as much power and explosiveness as any linebacker out there.”

– Andrew Maxwell was compared to Kirk Cousins in terms of work ethic and intangible-wise, which is good praise for anyone. He also said Maxwell has shown patience in his role and that “this is his time.”

“He’s an extremely hard worker, who pays great attention to detail. He has a great feel in the huddle. Physically, he’s got good size and strength. He’s got a great arm. What he needs is game experience,” Dantonio said.

– Perhaps the highest praise was reserved for two redshirt freshmen Shilique Calhoun and Joel Heath, who enter the year as backup defensive ends.

Dantonio said Calhoun is “going to be a phenomenal player (at MSU),” and went on to say that he has “Julian Peterson-type ability.”

As for Heath, Dantonio said he “looks just like Will Gholston.” Heath is 6-foot-6, 277 pounds.

The reason for the move of Denzel Drone to tight end was explained as a way to allow these young defensive ends to get more reps in practice, but Dantonio also noted “we’ve got a history of making guys here (at tight end),” and he used Josh Rouse as an example. A move back to the defensive line has not been ruled out.

Micajah Reynolds is listed as the No. 2 nose tackle, behind Anthony Rashad White. Dantonio said Reynolds has got to keep his weight under control and be consistent, and that he will play wherever he can be used the best.

– On the offensive line, the starters listed on the depth chart are LT Dan France, LG Blake Treadwell, C Travis Jackson, RG Chris McDonald, RT Fou Fonoti. Dantonio called it the strongest offensive line MSU has had since he has been here.

With Skyler Burkland back healthy, he should figure into the mix somehow — presumably at a tackle position, and he currently is listed as the backup at left tackle. Dantonio said “Skyler’s a very good player, he’s gonna play some place.”

– The only position with two starters listed is free safety, where Kurtis Drummond and R.J. Williamson have the distinguished “OR” between their names. Jairus Jones, though listed as the backup to strong safety Isaiah Lewis, also will be in the mix at a position that is essentially up for grabs.

– Running back has one starter listed, after most of last year the depth chart had three starting running backs. Le’Veon Bell is listed as the No. 1 back, but Dantonio had some strong words regarding the running back.

“I think it’s important that we’re not complacent. So he’ll be challenged as well. That’s my answer,” he said when asked about Bell.

When asked who will get carries at running back, Dantonio followed up his previous thought by saying, “your guess is as good as mine … I really don’t care who plays.”

A full transcript of Dantonio’s press conference is available here.

As spring practice kicked off today, Mark Dantonio said the waiver for transfer DeAnthony Arnett to have eligibility to play immediately this fall has been filed.

Michigan State should receive a ruling from the NCAA within three weeks.

“3 weeks! Got my fingers crossed! Praying for the best every night!” Arnett tweeted Monday.

Arnett is listed behind Keith Mumphery and Andre Sims Jr. at Z-receiver position. In my opinion, Arnett is a good candidate to play slot and with his talent, it would be hard to keep him off the field.

Dantonio said the Spartans will prepare as if he will be eligible to play.

“We’ll work him as if he’s going to be game ready, and it should be a very exciting player, based on high school and how he ran around in winter conditioning,” he said. “A very fluid athlete, very quick, explosive. He’ll pay us great dividends, I think, as a person and player moving forward.”

Michigan State’s athletic department had been taking its time to file the paperwork, making sure it had all the important medical information on Arnett’s father in order and included.

The basketball season ended less than a week ago for Michigan State, and now the spring football season will get underway today.

Unlike the past couple years, MSU has quite a new look to its team, especially the offense. This will make for an intriguing spring with plenty of storylines.

For the next month, until the spring game on April 28, Michigan State will be practicing and getting to see what this team will look like heading into the 2012 season.

Here are five questions I have going into spring, and things I will be paying close attention to:

1. How does Andrew Maxwell adjust to being QB1?

Maxwell is in the middle of his third year in the program, and for the first time, he will enter spring practice as the starting quarterback. How he does stepping into a leadership role this spring and how he and the new receiving corp mesh will dictate lot of the perception around the Spartans heading into the fall.

All eyes will be on the QB as he adjusts to the spotlight, and it will be a big one because for the first time in a while, it isn’t No. 8 under center. Ideally, poise and confidence will be there from day one and silence doubts or concerns from fans.

2. Who emerges from a bunch of young defensive lineman?

The Spartans lost All-American Jerel Worthy to the NFL a year early, and behind him is little experience, but plenty of raw talent. Anthony Rashad White does not fall into the category of youth, and he is expected to start. Micajah Reynolds remains in the mix after a strong showing in bowl practices last year. Tyler Hoover, moving over from defensive end, could vie for playing time. The youth at the DT position is led by James Kittredge, who started on the offensive line at Vanderbilt before transferring to MSU. He will be a redshirt sophomore. Brandon Clemons and Matt Ramondo also figure to be in the mix, and it might not be out of the question that Blake Treadwell slides back over to the d-line.

At the defensive end position, Damon Knox, Joel Heath and Shilique Calhoun all have drawn rave reviews from the Spartans staff and are fighting for playing time. How good are these three redshirt freshmen? Junior Denzel Drone has been moved to tight end for spring practice, and maybe beyond — which could be very reflective of just what the coaching staff sees in the younger players.

3. Who wins the battle to replace Trenton Robinson?

The list begins with Kurtis Drummond, who played very well as a nickelback last season. It continues with Jairus Jones and R.J. Williamson. Drummond likely is the leader, but Jones and Williamson could make a push behind him. It should be a close battle through the spring.

Those who do not win playing time at safety will compete for the nickelback spot. Arjen Colquhoun and Trae Waynes could figure into this spot, as could incoming freshman Demetrious Cox once the fall arrives.

4. What does the offensive line look like?

With Skyler Burkland back healthy, MSU has a nice little problem on its offensive line — options. MSU allowed the second-fewest sacks in the Big Ten last season, despite having a patchwork line for the first half of the year.

Burkland figures to slot back in at right tackle, replacing Fou Fonoti. Fonoti would seem the likely candidate to slide into Joel Foreman’s old spot at left guard, while Chris McDonald (RG), Dan France (LT) and Travis Jackson (C) round out the line. Fonoti could be pushed by redshirt freshman Donavan Clark, who was highly recruited and the staff liked a lot last season.

5. How healthy are the wide receivers and who is stepping up?

Bennie Fowler and Juwan Caesar are coming off injuries, and both are expected to contribute at WR this year. Tony Lippett, Keith Mumphery and Andre Sims Jr. all will have good reps this spring, as will Dana Dixon who moved over to WR from CB. DeAnthony Arnett, of course, will be worth paying close attention to, but more off the field in most respects because of the waiver that will be filed to see if he will be eligible this fall.

It would seem the ideal mix for MSU this spring features Fowler and Lippett as the X and Y receivers, with Arnett in the slot. Time till tell how that plays out. Caesar, in my mind, is the wild card. His tape from high school is impressive and he looks like a B.J. Cunningham type receiver.

As for what to expect from The Little Brother Blog, position by position breakdowns are on the docket (likely to be one per week), and consistent updates about position battles on the field. Keep in mind, this also is a time where recruits come to campus to check out a practice, which also culminates with the spring game — and a big time for the staff to secure commitments.

Lots happening in East Lansing and I don’t know about you, but Boise State already is on my mind.

Green received 53 first-team votes (of a possible 65) for the AP team and was the lone senior, joined by Kansas’ Thomas Robinson, Ohio State’s Jared Sullinger, Kentucky’s Anthony Davis and Creighton’s Doug McDermott.

He is the fourth player from Michigan State to be selected to The Associated Press All-America team, joining Magic Johnson, Shawn Respect and Mateen Cleaves.

“It’s an honor because those are the guys who I looked up to, paved the way for me, starting with Magic and going to Respert and Cleaves,” Green said. “Those guys, every time I walk into the gym I see their names up in the rafters and that’s a goal that everyone has who’s playing. Just being mentioned in the same sentence with those guys means a lot. All of them are winners, all of them are great players and all of them are successful and great people.”

The Wooden Award All-American team, composed of ten members, featured Green and the same four as the AP team. They were joined by Murray State’s Isaiah Canaan, Marquette’s Jae Crowder, Missouri’s Marcus Denmon, West Virginia’s Kevin Jones, and North Carolina’s Tyler Zeller.

Green is the first Spartan named to the Wooden Award team since Charlie Bell in 2001, and the eighth overall.

Green also is a finalist for the John R. Wooden Award. The winner will be announced Saturday on ESPN.

Green already has been named a first-team All-American by The Sporting News, United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA), CBSSports.com and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

December 7. The Spartans were 7-2 and Draymond Green was frustrated following a 20-point win against Central Connecticut State.

That’s what prompted me to write this: Frustrating Spartans bring memories of 2007, Final Four runs. Read it. Really, read it.

At that time, I felt and believed Green saw in this team the potential to be like the 2008 and 2009 Final Four teams. I also believed this wasn’t the team to do it, but it would be similar to the 2007 team, and set the stage for what was to come.

The difference was in 2007, the team did merely that … set the stage. It stumbled and bumbled its way through a mediocre season before the next two teams had tremendous success.

The sixth paragraph said this in reference to the 2007 Michigan State team: “A team that could have had a potentially special year didn’t.”

Well, fast-forward to this March 23, and the 2011 team did set the stage, but in amazing fashion. This was a team that probably should not have had a special year, but DID.

Tom Izzo said this team was not even among the top five, six or seven most talented teams he has had. It won his seventh Big Ten title anyway and claimed his third Big Ten Tournament title.

And as frustrating as it was at times for Izzo and Green, this team became incredibly loveable to everyone — especially the fans.

This team overachieved in fantastic ways, but when you think back through the season, it really doesn’t feel like they did. Somehow, it felt like like they did exactly as they should have.

With each game, these Spartans made their fans believe they could compete with anyone in the country. There was a real, true sense of belief because in every game someone was stepping up.

You knew what to expect from Green. But Brandon Wood could team up with him and hit a flurry of shots on any given night.

Keith Appling could decide he was a takeover player and drive to the hoop for multiple and-ones. Austin Thornton could drain 3s with consistency and even have plays run for him.

Derrick Nix could spin, duck and do just about any crazy move in the post to score. Adreian Payne could flash the five-star talent people expected and dominate the post.

Branden Dawson could do the same and sky for rebounds and electrifying dunks. Travis Trice and Brandan Kearney could step in and hit some shots and bring energy.

The fact it was a true team in every sense of the word was clear. The chemistry erased any memory of a difficult 2010 season. This was different. This is different as the program moves forward.

I also wrote in that December piece that there was a positive vibe from everything this team was doing. Boy, was that ever true. But against Louisville, for the first time all season, the Spartans really did not show up. For the first time this season, the Spartans didn’t make you believe.

And it was at the worst possible time, falling two wins short of the Final Four. They will get there, though.

After all, the fact that every four-year player for Tom Izzo has reached a Final Four still holds true. On the roster next year, Nix will be the only one who has been there.

The rest of the team will get their chance. This group will get there. They had a special year and it will only get better. They are so unbelievably good and will be even better.

This 2011 team did it. The stage is set and the bar is high.

A few days after being named Michigan’s Mr. Basketball, future Spartan Matt Costello was named the Gatorade Boys Player of the Year in Michigan on Thursday.

Gary Harris, another player committed to Michigan State, won the same award in the state of Indiana. Harris already has been selected as a participant McDonald’s All-American, the Jordan Classic and the Nike Hoop Summit.

Costello averaged 25.1 points, 17.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 3.9 block per game as a senior at Bay City Western.

“When you think about all of the qualities it takes to be a team leader, Matt Costello exemplifies those characteristics,” Bay City Western athletic director Michael Thayer said in a statement. “His work ethic is second to none. He does not take anything for granted and has worked extremely hard to get where he is today.”

Costello also won the award as a junior last year.

Harris averaged 25.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 4.2 steals and 3.7 assists per game as Hamilton Southeastern in Fishers, Ind.

“Gary Harris is an extremely unselfish player and he can do it all on the court,” Hamilton Southeastern Head Coach Brian Satterfield said in a statement. “The things he does on offense are well-documented, but what separates him is what he can do at the defensive end. He can play any position on the court. He’s strong enough to play on the inside and he’s quick enough to cover anybody on the perimeter.”

The Gatorade Player of the Year awards recognize accomplishments on the court, as well as off. Costello maintains a 3.73 GPA, and according to his Mr. Basketball campaign website, is a member of the National Honor Society and his school’s jazz band. He also has participated in coaching and officiating youth basketball.

Harris holds a 3.55 GPA and has volunteered with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and with youth basketball camps, according to The State News.

Two players Michigan State is recruiting heavily also won the awards in their respective states.

Junior forward Jabari Parker, of Simeon Career Academy in Chicago, was named the Illinois Gatorade Player of the Year. Parker averaged 19.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 3.3 blocks per game and led Simeon to its third consecutive Class 4A state championship.

Sophomore point guard Tyus Jones averaged 28.1 points and eight assists per game at Apple Valley High School in Minnesota and won the same award.
