Spartans Snapshots (Jan. 9 Edition)
Spartans headed to the Senior Bowl
Although the full list has not been released, Kirk Cousins and Brian Linthicum will be participating in the Senior Bowl on Jan. 28 in Mobile, Ala., based on this tweet from Linthicum. There has to be a good chance at least one other Spartan will be participating and if not, there are many other senior showcases which the likes of Keith Nichol, Keshawn Martin and B.J. Cunningham will participate in.
Also, many members of the senior class now are at workout facilities around the country preparing for the NFL Draft and the Michigan State pro day. Nichol and Linthicum are training together in Miami, while Cousins is elsewhere in Florida. Martin and Trenton Robinson are together somewhere in California, while Cunningham is in Phoenix training at Fischer Sports.
Cousins featured in tonight’s BCS title game
Cousins will be at the BCS Championship Game tonight to receive the Lowe’s Senior Class Award. He also will be in a commercial, which will air during the game at some point.
Here it is, in case you miss it:
ESPN.com’s Big Ten blog list includes two Spartans
Adam Rittenberg compiled the top five defenders to watch next season in the Big Ten and included William Gholston and Denicos Allen. Gholston had 70 tackles, 16 for loss and five sacks. Allen finished second in the conference with 11 sacks and had 83 total tackles.
Kerrick enrolls early
Kyle Kerrick, part of the 2012 recruiting class, has enrolled at Michigan State early after graduating high school following his fall semester. A three-star wide receiver from Pennsylvania, Kerrick will have a chance to compete for playing time through spring ball and practices.
Last week recap from A Beautiful Day for Football
Another MSU blog, A Beautiful Day for Football, did a great recap of all the crazy events in the past week. Check it out here.
Moving on up
The men’s basketball team moved up to No. 6 in The Associated Press poll this week. The Spartans defeated Wisconsin at the Kohl Center for the first time since 2001 last week.
On a bit of an interesting note, Michigan State was set at 4:1 odds in a fictional list done by SuperBook at the Las Vegas Hilton. Ohio State was the favorite at 3:5.
Women’s basketball hitting its stride
A team that had relatively high hopes in the preseason after winning the Big Ten Championship in 2010 had been mediocre to start off the season. But so far in 2012, the women’s hoops team is on a roll. Last week, they downed Michigan on Wednesday 60-55, and upset then-No. 22 Penn State 75-65 on Saturday. Taylor Alton had 20 points in the win against the Lady Nittany Lions.
Hockey drops weekend pair to Miami (Ohio)
The Spartans fell to Miami in overtime 2-1 on Friday night, before being pummeled 4-0 on Saturday night.
