Cunningham, Nichol impressing at all-star game practices

B.J. Cunningham and Keith Nichol have been among the top performers at their all-star game practices.

Cunningham has drawn rave reviews at the East-West Shrine Game practices in St. Petersburg, Fla.

“Some guys with good showings on Day 1 of E-W Shrine: USC DT D. Harris, Michigan St WR BJ Cunningham, WVU CB Tandy, and Fresno WR Devon Wylie,” McShay tweeted after Monday’s practices.

McShay elaborated on Cunningham on Tuesday and talked about more about his performance.

“I think this year the player that’s really standing out above all else is B.J. Cunningham, the wide receiver from Michigan State,” ESPN draft expert Todd McShay said Tuesday.

“He’s shown that he can separate from any of the defensive backs here one-on-one, very good understanding of reading defenses and how to find soft spots in zones, and he’s strong catching the football, doing a good job in traffic and then getting up the field. He really is standing out. There are some other good receivers here, like Junior Hemingway from Michigan and Jarius Wright from Arkansas, but to me, B.J. Cunningham is in a class of his own and could be really solidifying a spot in that third-round range.”

Two other draft reporters watching the practices added their thoughts on Cunningham as well.

“Good practice from Michigan State WR BJ Cunningham, still not a ton of seperation, but plucked everything, sneaky strider speed,” said Wes Bunting, of nationalfootballpost.com, after Tuesday’s practice.

“Biggest winners today at Shrine Game East practice: CB Josh Norman, CB Micah Pellerin, WR BJ Cunningham, WR AJ Jenkins, QB Austin Davis,” added Eric Galko of optimumscouting.com after Wednesday’s practice.

Sports Illustrated’s Tony Pauline also had input on Cunningham as one of his ten best performers after Tuesday’s practice.

The East-West Shrine Game will take place Saturday at 4 p.m. and will be on NFL Network.

Tuesday was the first day of practice for Nichol at the NFLPA Bowl in Carson, Calif., and he came out impressing.

Allen Trieu of Scout.com tweeted this after the day concluded, “Keith Nichol (Mich St), Lavasier Tuinei (Oregon) and Jared Green (Southern) have been the best of the WRs so far #NFLPA.”

” Keith has done well. He’s one of the best route runners here & has good hands. Main thing for him will be running a good 40,” Trieu added when I asked him about Nichol’s performance so far.

Another Scout.com reporter mentioned a CFL scout said Nichol had “sticky hands.”

Nichol has been training at Bommarito Performance Systems in Miami for the upcoming NFL Draft. He started his training on Jan. 4, two days after MSU beat Georgia in the Outback Bowl, and will return there after the NFLPA Game.

Check out this post-workout interview with Nichol from Scout.com.

The NFLPA Bowl will air on NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus) at 6 p.m.

Kirk Cousins, Brian Linthicum and Trenton Robinson will participate in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., on Jan. 28. Practices will take place throughout next week for those three.

In case you missed it, Cousins. Linthicum, Robinson and Keshawn Martin were in the first round of invitees to the NFL Combine in Indianapolis on Feb. 22-28.
