Spartans Snapshots (March 12 edition)

Michigan State players on one expert’s early award watch lists

College Football News made some very early predictions of its top contenders for positional award in the coming season, and two Spartans made their lists.

Denicos Allen was listed as the No. 7 contender for the Butkus Award, given to the nation’s top linebacker.

“East Lansing’s version of Georgia LB Jarvis Jones, Allen is a regular in opposing backfields. Playing with reckless abandon and great closing speed, he led the Spartans in sacks and tackles for loss as a first-time starter,” said Richard Cirminiello.

Will Gholston made two different lists, the Lombardi Award (top defensive lineman) and the Bednarik (top defensive player). He was placed at No. 5 on both.

“Gholston is the Spartans’ version of (Clemson defensive end Jadeveon) Clowney, an imposing 6-7, 280-pounder, with tremendous athletic ability. He can help his cause by eliminating the chippy plays that earn personal fouls,” said Cirminiello about Gholston as a contender for the Lombardi.

“The stage is set for Gholston to become a household name this year. The next-level prototype at end abused the Georgia O-line for five tackles for loss in the Outback Bowl,” said Cirminiello of Gholston’s on the Bednarik list.

Hockey team swept by Miami (Ohio)

The Spartans traveled to Oxford, Ohio for the CCHA quarterfinals, but failed to advance as they dropped two games in a row — in ugly fashion, losing 6-0 and 4-1.

The Munn Minute breaks down Friday and Saturday’s losses.

More importantly, the Spartans now await a potential at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The scenario facing the team is broken down here by the fine folks at Munn Minute yet again.
